Emo Hairstyles
Common Characteristics of Emo Hair
A significant part of any emo lifestyle is the emo hairstyle. You can listen to the right music, wear the right
clothes and make-up and even have an emo attitude, but if you don't get the hair right you may end up looking
like a poser or a nerd. In most cases the hair is the first thing you notice when you encounter an emo and
is the best way to differentiate between an emo and any other teenager.
Luckily, emo hairstyles are extremely easy to achieve (one of their biggest advantages) and, depending upon which
style you choose, straightforward to look after.
Emo Hairstyle Characteristics
-
The hair is generally straight. Emo hairstyles are all about distinct shapes and sharp edges
and although curly haired people may be able to achieve the look with a great deal of gel or wax,
it is going to be hard to maintain and will not quite hit the mark. Guys and girls alike straighten
their hair. For emos there are no negative connotations associated with spending a great deal of
time trying to get that perfect look.
-
Emo hairstyles are usually very dark or very light. Most emos dye their hair. Jet black is the most
popular shade but some guys and girls opt for a very light bleach or dark brown. The fact that it is
blatantly obvious that the hair has been dyed is not a problem at all. In fact, this often earns the
wearer even more kudos. Likewise, it isn't necessary for the dye job to be perfect. Light roots or
mismatched colors add to uneven look of the hairstyle.
-
The majority of emo hairstyles are short. Boys will usually opt for either a shaven head or hair
that is short at the back and longer at the front. Although some boys will choose a longer length
this is very unusual. Girls will also usually have a shorter, chopped-into style although it isn't
abnormal for them to leave their hair long and add multiple layers.
-
Regardless of the hair length, emo hairstyles are always asymmetrical. Uneven lengths and sharp shapes
help towards achieving a jagged appearance to the hair. Emos spend hours sculpting their hair into
large spikes and defined edges and use a large amount of gel and hairspray in the process.
-
Bangs are another crucial element of emo hairstyles. Dedicated emos will almost always have long
bangs or fringes that are swept to one side and held firmly in place with lots of hairspray. The
general trend is to obscure part of the face with the bangs, resulting in further asymmetrical dimension
to the hairstyle.
-
Many emo hairstyles also incorporate highlights. These are usually bright colors such as red, blue,
purple or shades of neon. They are not obligatory but do add a splash of color and an additional facet
of unevenness to the look.
