Female Emo Haircuts

Solutions for our longer haired friends!
When it comes to looking for inspiration for female emo haircuts, emo girls are at somewhat of a disadvantage. Unlike the boys, girls can't easily turn to bands and groups for inspiration, they simply don't have as much choice as the guys have. Although there are plenty of emo girls at school, they do tend to have the same styles as the guys and this doesn't suit everyone.

Emo simply can't be defined; it is a music genre, a way of dressing, a lifestyle, a persona and, above all, a personality! For those dedicated followers of all things "emo" its appeal lies very much in its obscurity.

Hair Length And Emo

One of the questions I am frequently asked concerns what does, and what does not, constitute female emo haircuts. A lot of girls are particularly worried about the length of their hair and wish to achieve a look that captures the essence of emo whilst maintaining a certain level of femininity.

The truth is, regardless of what people say, being emo is about being you. If people say that your hair is too long for you to be emo, then they have it all wrong; after all, being emo is about declaring your individuality and personality. Emo is something you are and something you feel inside, your hair is irrelevant.

Having said that, I understand that having good emo hair is all part of fitting in with the crowd and I have therefore put together a couple of suggestions for those of you who find the thought of losing your long hair almost too much to bear.

If you're really attached to the length of your hair then opt for a milder emo haircut. Despite what many people say, female emo haircuts can be long, and being emo doesn't necessarily involve shaving your head or losing those beautiful locks.

If you do wish to keep the length of your hair simply bear in mind the general rules of emo hair.

Edges, And Lots of Them!

One of the few crucial elements of an emo haircut is its lack of symmetry. Asymmetrical is the word here. Emo hair should be uneven in places and full of different shapes and dimensions. Most emo guys and girls achieve this by cutting sharp layers and edges into their hair and then shaping and molding them into spikes. However, there are other ways of achieving this look and if you do not wish to, there is no need to cut dramatically into your hair. One way in which you could produce an asymmetrical look is to cut longer layers into your hair, keeping the longest layer at your desired length. You can then style your hair with a really good pair of straighteners. Use the strengtheners to create uneven flicks throughout the hair, some larger than others, and hold them firmly in place with a very strong hairspray.

Bangs

Another very common element of the emo haircut is bangs. This is something that will not be a problem for those longer haired girls who are seeking a good female emo haircut. Sweep a large section of your fringe across one eye and, once again, hold in place with a good quality hairspray.

Color

The hair should be very light or very dark. If you have kept a longer style, I suggest adding sharp patches of color to achieve the defined shapes your fellow shorthaired emos gain through their spikes. This way you can have long, feminine hair with all the spunk and kudos of the shorter female emo haircuts.
